Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in a gunfight at Jawaharke in Mansa district on Sunday.

One of the two men who sustained serious injuries along with Moose Wala in the gunfight succumbed to his wounds. The assailants fired at least 30 bullets. Moose Wala was rushed to Mansa Civil Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

A three-member SIT, including the SP Mansa and Bathinda and Mansa investigation by the CIA, was formed to investigate the murder of murdreMoosewala.

The incident occurred a day after Punjab Police ordered the withdrawal of its security along with over 420 persons, including former MLAs, Jathedars of two Takhts, Deras chiefs, and policemen.

However, Mansa SSP Gaurav Toora said that Moose Wala had four policemen for security and only two of the gunmen were temporarily withdrawn. He further added that Moose Wala had not taken with him the remaining two gunmen who were with him at the time of the incident.

The 29-year-old singer joined the Congress in December last year and unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Punjab elections on a Congress ticket from the Mansa district.

Expressing its condolences, the Congress said the “murder” of Moose Wala was a terrible blow to the party and the nation. “The murder of Shri Sidhu Moose Wala, Congress candidate from Punjab and a talented musician, has come as a terrible blow to the Congress party and the entire nation. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, supporters, and friends. We are united and undeterred, at this time of extreme grief,” the party tweeted from its official account.

Prime Minister Bhagwant Mann said he was deeply shocked by the gruesome murder and that no one involved in the incident will be spared. “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of Siddhu Moosewala. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and fans around the world. I appeal to everyone to remain calm.”

The former prime minister and Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal mourned the death while criticizing Mann for his government’s decision to remove security from Moose Wala. “This is an extremely grim and critical hour, which requires all of us to exercise restraint and political skill. On his part, CM must reflect deeply on why Punjab under him has descended into anarchy with a total collapse of law and order.”

“The CM should also think honestly whether the cheap populist decision to withdraw security from Moosewala is directly responsible for the tragedy. After all, he was facing a tangible threat to his life. This is not the time to score political points, but someone must take responsibility for the situation,” Badal wrote on Twitter.

The civil surgeon at Mansa hospital said Moose Wala was brought dead to the facility, while the other two were referred to another hospital for further treatment after receiving primary treatment.

“Three people were brought to the hospital, of which Sidhu Moosewala was dead. After giving primary treatment, the two injured were referred to a higher institute for further treatment,” said Dr. Ranjeet Rai, quoted by ANI news agency.
