The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) on Monday recommended the names of Amit Panghal and Vikas Krishan for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
“The Boxing Federation of India has conducted a due diligence exercise on the performance of athletes and coaches for the past four years,” the BFI statement read.
Boxers Simranjeet Kaur, Lovlina Borgohain, and Manish Kaushik have been recommended for the Arjuna Prize, while N. Usha has been recommended for the Dhyanchand Prize by the federation.
The two recommendations for the Dronacharya Prize were coaches Chhote Lal Yadav and Mohammad Ali Qamar.
Amit has been nominated for India’s greatest sports honor for his consistent performances in recent years. In 2019, he won the silver medal at the prestigious World Championship in the flyweight category.
Also a gold medalist at the Asian Games, he was on top of the podium in Jakarta in 2018. In the same year, he won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Vikas, 28, who is more experienced than Panghal, won his third medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta (Bronze) in 2018. He also won the gold medal on the Gold Coast the same year.
Krishnan remains the only second Indian, behind Vijender Singh, who qualifies for three Olympics. Krishnan received the Arjuna Prize in 2012.
